Compost plant gets green light to recycle food waste
Acorn Recycling, located in the village of Littleton, near Thurles, is expected to expand its operations considerably in the coming years following the granting of a licence from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Environmental Protection Agency to produce the nutrient-rich compost.
The company opened a €7 million, state-of-the-art plant in June 2010 and employs eight staff, with the plant being considered one of the most advanced composting facility of its kind in Ireland or Britain for the treatment of biological waste.
The raw material for the manufacture of the compost product is derived from domestic organic waste bin collections and food waste residue before being treated at 70 degrees celsius prior to curing. The scientific process effectively replaces landfill as a means of managing organic material.
The company produces 13,000 tonnes of compost per year and sell the odourless compost in bulk to customers who can collect at the plant, or it will alsodeliver within a specified radius area.
The affordable high-end organic compost is particularly suitable for use in horticulture, agriculture, domestic gardens and sports fields.
