Fianna Fáil TD’s office damaged in late-night attack

GARDAÍ in Galway are investigating an attack on the office of a former Fianna Fáil minister.

Fianna Fáil TD’s office damaged in late-night attack

Deputy Noel Treacy, a long-standing TD in Galway East, said he was shocked by the attack on his office in Athenry, Co Galway.

The attack took place on Tuesday night, just hours after the budget was delivered and Mr Treacy, who had remained in Dublin overnight, said he and his family were upset by the incident.

Windows and the front door to the office were smashed in the late-night incident.

“I will neither be bullied nor intimidated by this kind of carry-on. Nor will my family or my staff. I condemn it completely,” said Mr Treacy yesterday.

Gardaí carried out a forensic examination at the Cross Street premises and the office was later boarded up.

Mr Treacy said yesterday that he and his staff and family were shocked and upset at what appeared to be a sustained attack. The glass wasn’t just broken, it was driven in. It’s not the kind of damage you’d cause by throwing stones, because the glass is double-glazed. It appears that some kind of heavy instrument was used to break the windows and the front door.”

He said that his two staff turned up at the office at 9am as usual and were very upset to see the damage. Mr Treacy’s wife, Mary, also went to the scene.

“I regard it as an attack on the democratic process, and possibly because I am a Fianna Fáil TD supporting the Government in taking the hard decisions that are necessary for the country.”
