THE father of a young man who went missing 10 years ago yesterday spoke of the family’s “absolute horror and trepidation” at facing into another year not knowing where their son is or what happened to him.

Family tell of their ‘horror’ 10 years after son vanished

Trevor Deely, aged 22, originally from Naas, Co Kildare, disappeared in the early hours of December 8, 2000 on a very windy and rainy night after attending an office Christmas party in Dublin’s south city.

The bank worker was last seen on Haddington Road, just off Baggot Street Bridge, as he walked home to his apartment on Serpentine Road, Sandymount.

To mark the tenth anniversary of his disappearance, investigating gardaí, together with Trevor Deely’s family, released a photograph of what would he would look like now, age 32.

“It’s absolute horror really and trepidation to hope we wouldn’t have to face into another year,” said Trevor’s father, Michael.

“The years have gone by so fast it’s unbelievable, but yet we had to live every second of every day. We try to be as positive as we can because otherwise there is no hope of this thing ever turning out anyway right.

“You would go into a rut and couldn’t live at all, you couldn’t work, you couldn’t do anything.”

He thanked the gardaí for producing the photograph: “We’re often told he loved IT and loved that work, so if he’s around someplace and working he’s likely to be working in an IT situation, maybe there’s someone who looks like that.”

He spoke at a press conference yesterday at Pearse Street Garda Station, along with investigating gardaí, including Detective Inspector Michael Cryan and Detective Sergeant Michael Fitzgerald.

“This investigation 10 years on is still open,” said DI Michael Cryan.

“What we have done this year to mark the tenth anniversary is we’ve created age progression photographs of what Trevor would look like now.

“It is the tenth Christmas he’s not home with his family and what we like to do is appeal to people who have information to come forward.

“In 10 years his siblings got married, he has six nieces — he’s missed all that.”

DI Cryan said the night Mr Deely disappeared was the night of a taxi strike and there were a lot of people walking along Haddington Road.

“There are people we believe who have information. They didn’t come forward 10 years ago. They may feel because they didn’t come forward then they can’t do it now, but they can.”
