Gardaí believe he may have been set upon following an argument earlier in a public house.

The victim has been named locally as John Walsh, who lived in Castletroy View. The attack happened at Altamira Terrace, Thomondgate, shortly after 10pm.

A youth aged 17 and a man were later arrested and were last night being held at Henry Street Garda Station.

A woman in her 20s was also arrested yesterday.

Gardaí believe a knife found near the scene was the weapon used. It has been sent for analysis.

Gardaí have established that Mr Walsh had been in a pub earlier and at least one of the two arrested males were also in the pub at the time.

There are unconfirmed reports that there was a minor incident in the pub. Some time later the assault took place.

Mr Walsh was found with massive upper body wounds and rushed to the Mid-West Regional Hospital.

He was said last night to be in a critical condition.

Gardaí at Mayorstone would like to hear from anybody who was in the Thomondgate area at about 10pm on Wednesday.
