THE flood of mass emigration to escape the mounting dole queues could soon turn into a tidal wave with Australia changing its residency visa requirements in ways which will make it more attractive for Irish workers.

The antipodean nation, already an attractive destination for Irish travellers looking for sun and adventure, has introduced a new points test to determine whether foreign nationals are applicable for a residency visa.

Where previously one of the main criteria was the person’s occupation, the Australian Government says its new system will attract “the best and brightest skilled migrants by emphasising high-level qualifications, better English language levels and extensive, skilled work experience”.
