Bungling burglar fails to ‘cod’ gardaí

A BUNGLING burglar tried to “cod” gardaí after a smash and grab raid at one of Cork’s best known chippers went wrong.

Bungling burglar fails to ‘cod’ gardaí

At 2.15am a man armed with a concrete block smashed the front window at Lennox’s fast food restaurant on Anglesea Street, just yards from Garda headquarters in the city.

Gardaí were quickly on the scene, but by the time they arrived the culprit had fled empty-handed.

Gardaí found a lot of blood at the scene and deduced that whoever had carried out the burglary must have accidentally injured themselves badly on the broken shards of glass.

Around an hour later, they came across a man in Pembroke Street who had a serious arm injury and he was asked for an explanation about the wound. His explanation didn’t exactly convince the gardaí.

They arranged for him to get treatment for the large gash on his arm from HSE ambulance personnel.

Superintendent Barry McPolin said gardaí didn’t believe the man’s explanation and started to carry out further inquiries. At 11am they arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the incident. He was taken to the Bridewell Garda Station where he was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

“The man is being detained on suspicion of burglary. I am very pleased the way the gardaí carried out their investigation.”
