Businessman denies naming lane after himself

A LIMERICK businessman has denied naming after himself the laneway where he runs his car repair workshop.

Businessman denies naming lane after himself

A sign, with the city council crest, is on the laneway with the wording: Daly’s Lane Lana O’Dalaigh.

Records at Limerick City Hall show the laneway is just logged as road number 369. And there is no Daly’s Lane in the city officially.

Garage owner, Mick Daly claims the laneway is named after John Daly, who was mayor of Limerick from 1899 to 1901. He said the naming of Daly’s Lane, his own name, was just a coincidence.

Mr Daly said he put up the name plate 15 years ago after discussions with the council who, he said, had run out of street name plates.

Cllr Tom Shortt now wants the name plate removed as there is no place in the city designated as Daly’s Lane. He said somebody was usurping the power of the council.

“The official street name is road number 369.What would happen if everyone was going around naming streets after themselves in the city?

“A democratic process needs to be followed when naming streets and lanes, so that there is some connection with the area.”

He has tabled a notice of motion for the next full meeting of the city council calling for the removal of the Daly’s Lane name plate.

Mr Daly, who has run his business in the lane for over 40 years, said: “Cllr Shortt is out of his jurisdiction as the lane is not in the area he is elected to represent. Anyway, the name plate is there more than seven years and cannot be removed.”
