IRELAND surrendered 69 people to other European Union countries last year on foot of arrest warrants for crimes, including murder and rape.

Figures published yesterday in the European Arrest Warrant Annual Report 2009 show that the state received 326 European Arrest Warrants in 2009 for a variety of offences.

Of those surrendered to other states last year, 21 were sent to Britain, 20 to Poland and 13 to Lithuania.
