THE Government is facing massive fines of between €20,000 and €100,000 a day unless its acts swiftly to clean up a toxic waste dump in Cork Harbour.

The European Commission has issued a formal letter of notice to the Government that the European Court will impose daily fines until it cleans up the dump at Haulbowline island.

Toxic waste, including the highly carcinogenic chromium 6, was discovered at the dump in June 2008.
