Rescue crews removed the mess from the epicentre of public life within two hours of its arrival and at minimal cost to the taxpayer – the bank bailout it was protesting will burn into us for decades to come and see this country haemorrhage upwards of €30bn.

But, jamming a cement mixer truck into the gates of Leinster House first thing in the morning – what was the demonstrator thinking of? Didn’t he realise that after a mere 81-day summer break deputies needed to ease back into the old routine and wouldn’t be turning up until 2.30pm?
