Man in serious condition after hurley road rage attack

A MAN remains in a serious condition after been beaten around the head with a hurley during a road rage attack.

Gardaí arrested the assailant at the scene after a motorist witness the shocking attack and rang 999.

The incident happened at the junction of Sandymount Road, Newbridge Avenue and Tritonville Road in Sandymount, Dublin, just before 7.30pm last Sunday.

Gardaí said the assault stemmed from an apparent minor incident, when a car “tipped into” the back of another car.

Garda sources said the driver of one of the cars got out armed with a hurley and confronted the other driver.

A row ensued and the first driver attacked the other man. Gardaí said he gave the man a “good hiding” with the hurley.

Gardaí said the victim, aged 49, suffered “serious head injuries” and was taken to nearby St Vincent’s Hospital.

A decision was made to transfer him to Beaumont Hospital, a specialist head injury hospital.

His condition is said to be serious, but gardaí do not think the injuries are life-threatening.

Gardaí were at the scene within a minute after a motorist alerted them.

They arrested the suspected assailant at the scene and detained him under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He can be held for 24 hours.

Gardaí sealed off the junction and forensic collision experts examined the scene. The hurley has been sent off for technical examination and samples have been taken from the man arrested.
