Famous gospel choir a festival headline act
The London Community Gospel Choir, which has performed with stars such as Madonna, the Waterboys and Elton John, will be among the headline acts at this year’s event, which takes place in November.
Its show will be on November 6 at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Waterford city, while the renowned Dublin Gospel Choir will be singing at Christchurch Cathedral on November 12.
With a 32-year history of performance, the London Community Gospel Choir was established by Rev Bazil Meade, Lawrence Johnson, Delroy Powell and John Francis and became the first concert gospel choir in Britain.
Known for its flair, swing beat, R‘n’B, traditional and soulful arrangements, it also does choreography, which has been described as “invigorating”.
Meanwhile, the Dublin Gospel Choir started as a school choir in Dublin’s inner city in the mid-1990s and now plays a host of concerts each year as well as a large number of corporate and charity events.
Its annual slot at the Electric Picnic festival has become legendary and it has also performed to an 82,000 sell-out crowd at Croke Park.
Sharing the stage over the years with heavyweights like Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, John Legend, Damien Rice and The Chieftains, it also featured with Chris de Burgh on a special new year’s day BBC Songs of Praise, broadcast to over 35 million viewers.
The 12-day international music festival opens with West End star Rebecca Storm taking to the Theatre Royal stage on November 2, while an evening of Italian opera, seven nights of competitive light opera, along with premieres and concerts are also on the programme.
