Stolen car had baby in the back

A MAN charged in relation to an incident in which a car was allegedly stolen while a baby boy was in the back seat has been given bail until November.

Patrick McCarthy, 61, of 34 Mullaly Grove, Cappamore, Co Limerick, is charged with the unauthorised taking of a car following a series of events in north Tipperary on Thursday afternoon.

Gardaí reported that a car was taken from the village of Newport at about 3pm and a four-month-old boy was in the back seat at the time.

The car was abandoned outside Nenagh following a major Garda operation and the baby boy was reunited with his parents.

A man was arrested on the outskirts of Limerick at about 4pm and detained at Nenagh Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He was charged later on Thursday and bailed to appear in court yesterday morning.

Gardaí applied to have the case adjourned to Nenagh district court on November 5 next and did not object to bail.

The accused was not called upon to speak until the judge considered a legal aid application. When Judge Martin asked Mr McCarthy if he was working, he replied: “No. I’m not, no. I’m unemployed. I’m drawing the dole.”

Judge Martin adjourned the case until November at Nenagh court, remanding the accused on continuing bail and granting legal aid.
