Micko for bronze honour in home town

A life-size statue is to be erected in Waterville, Co Kerry, of football legend Mick O’Dwyer, 74, winner of four All-Ireland medals and widely regarded as the country’s most successful team manager.

Details were announced at a public meeting in Waterville.

“We think it’s important that a great Waterville man and a great Kerryman be honoured during his lifetime,” said one of the organisers, Tony Donnelly.

“We have a tendency in Ireland to honour people when they’re dead, but we think it’s only right to give due recognition to Micko while he’s still with us.

“He has always been a loyal and dedicated member of Waterville GAA club and has given huge commitment to the club throughout his life. He has also brought great fame to Waterville.”

The organising committee is to apply for Leader programme funding for the project, estimated to cost around €90,000.
