THE recession has been blamed for a sharp fall-off in support by Irish people of the importance of funding humanitarian aid projects.

An EU survey reveals the number of Irish citizens who believe it is very important the EU funds humanitarian aid activities in underdeveloped countries has dropped dramatically over the past four years.

Just 49% of Irish people polled claimed such funding remained very important, compared to 64% in 2006.
