Eurostat: Ireland among cheaper EU member states for energy prices

THE latest statistics comparing the cost of purchasing energy for household use in the 27 EU states indicates Ireland was among the cheaper countries in late 2009.

Ireland is ranked 18th out of 27 in the cost of purchasing the average 100 kWh of electricity for home use when measured, according to Purchasing Power Standard (PPS), a common reference currency unit that takes account of different purchasing power levels between countries. The EU average stands at €16.45, while the cost in Ireland is €15.88. The dearest country according to PPS was Hungary at €24.26.

Ireland was also below the EU average of €15.99 for purchasing a gigajoule of gas, at €15.29.
