Man may have been dead in flat for a month

A MAN with suspected head injuries may have been dead for at least a month in his apartment in Kinsale, Co Cork, before being discovered.

The man was a Portuguese national of Asian extraction. Gardaí are trying to establish if he sustained head injuries during a row. The body of 44-year-old kitchen porter Alberto Bo Ken was discovered in the flat in the harbour town last Sunday.

The discovery was made at about 5pm by Mr Ken’s landlord who had not seen him for four weeks. Gardaí sealed off the area for technical examination and a postmortem was carried out on Monday at Cork University Hospital by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

The postmortem revealed the Portuguese passport holder, who was of Chinese extraction, had a significant injury to his head.

Superintendent Eddie MacEoin, who is leading the investigation, said Gardaí are keeping an open mind on the case and awaiting further tests which will have to be carried out to establish the exact cause of death. Gardaí believe Mr Ken was “involved in an incident” in the town last month and he may have died in his flat a short time later. They have appealed for anybody who witnessed anything suspicious in the Emmett Street area of Kinsale early on Sunday, June 6, to contact them.

Mr Ken may have sustained his injuries after being involved in an altercation with another person at around 12.45am.

At the time Mr Ken had been on his way home to his flat at nearby O’Connell Street after a night out socialising. “We are anxious to speak to anybody who was in the Emmett Street area around that time and who saw anything suspicious. But we are particularly anxious to speak to an American man who came to Mr Ken’s assistance at the scene. That person may be able to provide us with some vital information,” Supt MacEoin said.

He said it was likely there were a lot of people around the Emmett Street area at the time because large crowds had been drawn to the town due to the bank holiday weekend and a point to point meeting. Mr Ken had lived in Kinsale for the past eight years and worked locally as a kitchen porter.
