Wire stars to stake out castle for wedding
The setting could not be more removed from the slums of Baltimore where hard-drinking, bed-hopping Detective Jimmy McNulty, played by West, works a crime-ridden beat.
Many of his co-stars from The Wire will attend the wedding in Glin Castle, home of the bride, Catherine FitzGerald who is a daughter of the 29th Knight of Glin, Desmond FitzGerald and his wife Madam Olda FitzGerald.
The couple, who met when they studied at Trinity College, have three children.
Dominic said: “We met when we were both doing Irish literature in Trinity. I was born in Yorkshire and went to Eton, but I’d grown up with this romantic notion of wanting to live in Ireland, because my mum’s family were Irish. Studying Joyce and Yeats seemed like the perfect opportunity.”
And it has led to what promises to be magical day in a castle setting tomorrow.
Dominic said recently: “I love doing theatre, but I’m probably best known for my role as Jimmy McNulty. I started doing the first series back in 2002, but then it became a big hit in the States and I ended up going back over there to film four more series.”
Local parish priest in Glin, Fr Thomas Crawford will officiate at the wedding ceremony in the Church of the Immaculate Conception which stands near the entrance gates to Glin Castle.
Fr Crawford said: “I have got to know Dominic over the past few years and Catherine and her two sisters went to school in the village. When I asked Dominic about The Wire, he said he would send me on a tape of it, but that he wouldn’t like me to listen to the language.”
A huge marquee has been erected on the castle grounds for the reception.
The Wire series is based on the story of a group of detectives locked in a doomed battle with inner city drug warlords in Baltimore.
Det McNulty, the hard-drinking, Irish American is the star of the series.
