As British police struggle to work out why a quiet taxi-driver gunned down innocent people around England’s scenic Lake District, a Mayfield man has spoken of his horror on learning the identity of the killer.

Freelance journalist John Coughlan, who lived in Cumbria for 13 years and worked alongside Bird for 18 months at the Sellafield nuclear plant, described him as a mild manner person who would always offer to buy you a pint at the local.
