Death of noted Gaelic scholar Breandán Ó Buachalla, aged 74

THE death occurred yesterday at the age of 74 of Gaelic scholar and academic professor Breandán Ó Buachalla.

A leading authority on the Irish language and in particular Gaelic poetry, Prof Ó Buachalla was yesterday described as an inspiration to students and fellow academics.

Tourism, Sport and Culture Minister Mary Hanafin described his passing as “a huge loss.”

Born in Cork, Prof Ó Buachalla taught at Queens University Belfast and University College Dublin, where he was Professor of Modern Irish Language and Literature from 1978 to 1996.
