Gardaí probe for clues in fatal crash
They are also investigating whether there was a collision between the two vehicles before they both went down an embankment.
Cornelius James “CJ” Dolan, 16, died when the red 98-registered Ford Mondeo in which he was a back-seat passenger collided with a gable wall, just yards from his home at Hollywood Estate, Hollyhill.
A few hours later, his fellow passenger Derry O’Callaghan, aged 19, from Killala Gardens, Knocknaheeny, died at Cork University Hospital.
Gardaí are investigating how the Mondeo and a 07-registered black Volkswagen Golf crashed at Harbour View Road, Knocknaheeny, at 11.35pm on Thursday.
Four HSE ambulances attended the scene and three other occupants of the Mondeo were taken to Cork University Hospital, including brothers John and Shane Heaphy. Their mother, Ann, denied suggestions that the crash arose out of a feud, or an argument. She said she “hadn’t got a clue” what caused the accident.
“As I came up (to the scene) all my neighbours and the Garda pulled me back and all I can see was my son saying ‘Dad, dad, dad’. That was John. As I collapsed someone told me my other son, Shane, was there. There was nothing happening with a row last night. That is all I have to say,” said Ms Heaphy.
The brothers and another unidentified man were brought to Cork University Hospital and two of the injured were released last night. The third is in a stable condition.
Two men who were in the black Volkswagen Golf escaped injury. The 40-year-old driver of the Volkswagen was arrested and taken to Gurranabraher Garda Station. The 21-year-old passenger in the same car was described as helping gardaí with their inquiries.
Gardaí in Gurranabraher are continuing to interview witnesses in the area, but are anxious that anyone with information should contact them on 021-4946200.
