Murder suspect caught at airport

GARDAÍ have arrested a top suspect for the fatal shooting of an innocent man in Dublin less than a year ago.

The 26-year-old was apprehended by detectives as he stepped off a plane at Dublin Airport on Saturday evening.

He has been wanted by investigators since the murder of Wayne Doherty in Hartstown, west Dublin, in July 2009.

The suspect fled the country after the shooting and was reported to have been living in Turkey and other countries.

He apparently decided to return home and gardaí were on standby to arrest him, after he disembarked a flight from England.

He was taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station and detained under Section 30 of The Offences Against The State Act 1939. He can be held for up to 72 hours.

Garda sources said detectives were hopeful of bringing charges against him.

Mr Doherty, 32, was shot dead after he confronted members of a drugs gang who were intent on attacking a friend and neighbour following a brawl in a pub earlier that evening.

Members of that gang pulled up in a car on Oakview Way in Hartstown to shoot his friend.

When Mr Doherty stood up for his neighbour, and approached the car, telling them to clear off, he was fatally shot.
