Jess to take close shave for missing person fund
However, that’s what one brave Cork woman is doing tonight night in An Spailpín Fánach at 8 o’clock.
Jess Lynch is going to have all of what she calls her “traffic-light-red” hair removed in aid of Mallow Search and Rescue and Missing Persons Ireland.
Her 27-year-old brother, Aidan Lynch, went missing on New Year’s Eve.
After a three-day search his body was recovered from the River Lee near Sullivan’s Quay.
For Jess and her family, the harrowing three-day search highlighted the good work that Garda and naval divers do in such tragic circumstances.
“He went into the river on New Year’s Eve, just gone. His body was found three days later. It was three days of hell, it was horrible. The lads were fantastic though. The navy divers, the Garda divers and everybody who was out.
“They were out in the boats giving their time in freezing conditions, so I just wanted to give something back and hopefully raise some awareness,” she said.
While most women would dread the idea of having their head shaved in public, Jess, who works in the Idle Hour pub, is taking it in good spirits.
“My hair is driving me mad but I can’t do anything with it until I get rid of it. The whole lot is coming off. A lot of people are looking for before and after pictures as my hair is bright red, traffic light red, so to see me bald will be interesting to say the least. I’m prepared for a bit of a slagging,” she said.
For Jess, however, the end justifies the means and she hopes to make a few thousand euro for a much needed cause.
“I’ve had sponsorship cards out and people have been brilliant donating spot prizes and raffle prizes. I don’t have a target, but I’m hoping to make a few grand and hopefully raise a bit of awareness.
“These are people who give their time for free, so it’s all about raising money for the work they do.”
