‘Something for everyone’ at choral festival

THE 55th Cork International Choral Festival will attract more than 4,000 competitors from as far apart as Mallow and Moscow.

This year’s festival, which runs April 28 to May 2, will feature performances in the concert hall at City Hall, Blackrock and Blarney Castle as well as schools and libraries.

“What happens in Cork is special, of international significance and contains something for everybody,” festival director John Fitzpatrick said.

This year’s gala concert will take place at City Hall on April 28 and will be a tribute to renowned composer Aloys Fleischmann.

One of the highlights of the festival is bound to be the Scala girls choir from Belgium.

The choir are making their first visit to Cork since 2006.

The choir have a serious reputation and are very adept at versions of many well known pop and rock songs from the likes of U2, Radiohead and Nirvana.

On Friday, May 1, there will be performances at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral by the National Choir of Ireland, led by conductor Paul Hiller.

There will also be performances on the same night at the North Cathedral.

The festival is a competitive platform and has become world renowned for high choral standards for more than half a century.

A total of 85 Irish choirs will compete this year, alongside 600 foreign singers from the USA, Russia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway and the Czech Republic.
