Gang steals ‘substantial’ haul of diamond rings from jewellers

A GANG made off with tens of thousands of euro worth of diamond rings following a robbery at a jewellers in east Cork during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardaí believe at least two men were responsible for the burglary which took place at Gemini Jewellers at Main Street, Midleton.

They broke in through the rear of the jewellers, which is situated at 95 Main Street, next to the Bank of Ireland, sometime between 3am and 4am.

They helped themselves to jewellery, predominantly diamond-encrusted engagement rings.

Two men were seen in the area about that time and they were carrying bags over their shoulders.

The thieves made their escape through the rear of the jewellers and proceeded to walk in the direction of Manley’s car park, which is close to the river and the Lidl supermarket.

A Garda spokesman said they could have made their escape on foot or have had a getaway car waiting for them near Lidl.

Once Gardaí were notified of the robbery they sealed off the premises and carried out a forensic examination in the hope of finding clues as to the identities of those responsible.

The spokesman said the shop owners were carrying out an inventory of stock to get an exact value on the jewellery stolen. However, he admitted the haul was likely to be “substantial”.
