Tributes to former council chair and rural campaigner
Michael Harrington, 70, who died at his home at Church Gate, Castletownbere, was chairman of the county council from June 1996 to June 1997.
He was co-opted onto the local authority in 1981 when sitting Fine Gael councillor Donie Harrington (no relation) died suddenly. He had served on the council since 1974.
Michael Harrington, who was leader of the FG party in the council, resigned from the local authority in 1999.
He was replaced on the council by the late Donie Harrington’s son, Cllr Noel Harrington.
His successor said that Michael Harrington, who owned a successful hardware business, was a man who championed the cause of people living in West Cork and had tried to improve the lives of those living in isolated areas.
“He was keen to improve all aspects of fishing, farming and tourism,” Cllr Harrington said.
“We were very strong friends for a long time. He is a big loss to his family and the community. Michael was well liked and respected.”
The current leader of FG on the council, Cllr Michael Hegarty, described Michael Harrington as an excellent public representative.
“He epitomised everything which is right and proper about public life. He was a great family man and a great contributor to debates. Michael was a life-long Fine Gael stalwart who represented everybody living in his area very well,” Cllr Hegarty said.
Michael Harrington is survived by his wife, Carmel, three sons and three daughters.
His removal takes place at 7.30pm today from Harrington’s Funeral Home, Castletownbere, to the Sacred Heart Church.
He will be buried at Droum Cemetery following requiem Mass at noon tomorrow.
