Garda launch Cork murder hunt
The man was named locally as Gerard “Topper” Staunton, aged 41, originally from Kilkieran Close, Hollyhill, on the northside of the city. He was shot as he was getting into his car at an address at Westlawn, Wilton, shortly after 8.30pm. The victim, who was known to gardaí, was unemployed and lived at Wilton with his partner and one child. He was rushed to the nearby Cork University Hospital where he died a short time later.
An incident room was set up at Togher Garda HQ last night as a murder investigation, led by Supt Charles Barry, got under way.
Early Garda reports were unable to say last night what type of gun was used. The victim was thought to have been shot at close range.
The scene of the shooting was cordoned off last night as gardaí awaited the arrival of technical experts who will conduct a full forensic examination of the area.
Staunton was due to appear in court early next month to face charges of having cocaine and cannabis for sale or supply to others.
The dead man was known to have strong criminal connections and a prominent involvement in the illegal drugs trade in Cork city.
Feuds between Cork criminal gangs have occasionally flared-up in recent years.
