Almost four out of five judges volunteer to pay pension levy

ALMOST four out of five judges have bowed to public pressure by volunteering to pay the pension levy imposed on other public sector workers in last April’s emergency budget.

However the judiciary, who earn salaries of up to €295,000, will escape deeper pay cuts of around €44,000 which were applied to public servants of similar pay scales in last month’s budget.

The Revenue Commissioners said 111 of the 141 judges have paid 10% of their income levy on a voluntary basis because the Constitution prevents the Government from cutting their pay.
