THE Government is paying out an average of €6 million a week in statutory redundancy claims, latest figures from the department of Enterprise Trade and Employment have shown.

Statutory redundancy is paid out from the social insurance fund when employers cannot afford to make the payment to former employees.

Currently, more than 42,000 claims are waiting to be processed, and the intake of new claims is on average 1,500 a week.
