Gardaí question pair in assault death inquiry
Noel Keegan, a retired member of the Defence Forces, was assaulted at the town’s Park Road, a short distance from his home, shortly after 9.45pm on New Year’s Eve. He was treated at the scene for his injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Shortly afterwards gardaí arrested a man and a woman, both in their 20s, and took them to Longford Garda Station for questioning.
They were being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Michael Curtis, undertook a postmortem yesterday evening after Mr Keegan’s body was removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar.
Gardaí sealed off the scene of the attack for a technical examination. A Garda spokesman said they were appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the attack to contact Longford Garda Station at 043-3350570, or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
Meanwhile, a pensioner was recovering in hospital yesterday after being attacked in her home by an intruder just as the new year was being rung in.
The woman, who is 80 and lives alone in Galway city, was assaulted by a raider who broke into her house around midnight. Gardaí say the woman suffered minor injuries but was deeply shocked by the attack.
