Festive free parking in Kerry

IN a bid to boost business during the Christmas shopping period, a number of towns in Kerry have reduced or removed parking charges.

And Limerick City Council, meanwhile, will make available every Friday and Saturday up to 3,000 free parking spaces in streets off the city centre.

The promotion starts tomorrow, with emphasis on free afternoon parking to attract shoppers to the city centre.

On street parking remains free on Sundays.

The initiative is aimed at helping city centre traders compete with out-of-town shopping centres. Mayor Kevin Kiely said the city council wanted to make the heart of the city as accessible as possible.

He said: “Building on the recent success of the Winterfest shopping festival and after meetings with local traders, we decided to go ahead with this Christmas parking initiative. Certain designated areas of Limerick have free on-street parking all day on Saturdays.”

In Kerry, however, Killarney Town Council is reducing parking rates in the New Street and Glebe car parks by 50% over the next three Saturdays.

Also, parking will be free for the month of December in the High Street and Lewis Road car parks which are a little further away from the town centre.

In Listowel, the town council has sanctioned free parking on Christmas week, starting on December 21.

Meanwhile, in Tralee, no changes to parking charges in the town have been agreed but the issue is expected to be considered at next week’s local town council meeting.

Tralee’s Christmas shopping festival starts tomorrow with a German-style Christmas market featuring traditional stands from Tralee’s partner town, Frankfurt-Höchst.

Tralee mayor Terry O’Brien will officially turn on the Christmas lights at 4.30pm tomorrow.

The annual Christmas in Killarney Festival will also get under way tomorrow evening with the switching on of Christmas lights following a parade of hundreds of carol-singing children.

A craft and food market, will be held in Killarney on each weekend until Christmas, starting this Saturday. The market will be in the Fair Field car park.

Shopkeepers in Killarney and Dingle are to offer customers discounts, with price reductions of up to 10% this weekend.
