People on dole ‘should sweep the streets’

THE Mayor of Limerick said yesterday that people drawing the dole would be better off sweeping the streets rather than sitting at home doing nothing.

Cllr Kevin Kiely said: “The days of giving people money for nothing are gone. That was OK in the days of the Celtic Tiger, but now the country is going broke.

“There needs to be a whole review of the dole and we should be encouraging people on the dole to get out into the community and get actively involved in various projects. They could do community work, they could do work for local authorities, they could sweep the street and paint the homes of elderly people.”
