TDs open to compromise on drink driving limit

A GROUP of Fianna Fáil backbenchers opposed to the lowering of the alcohol limit for drink driving are willing to accept a compromise such as penalty points rather than a total driving ban for those caught over the planned new limit.

The 23 TDs plan to retable the motion against the proposed drink driving laws if Transport Minister Noel Dempsey is not willing to meet them halfway on the issue.

The motion was withdrawn when Mr Dempsey agreed to discuss the matter with them at a meeting to take place this evening.
