THE Government must provide urgent financial aid to save Ireland’s vegetable growing industry which supports up to 2,000 jobs.

The call came last night from industry figure John O’Donovan, who warned that the industry will be dead within a year without state support.

The commercial grower and horticultural consultant, who speaks for most of the country’s 200 or so remaining growers, said his own business has been devastated this year and he may not be able to grow vegetables next year.
