THE introduction of the nursing home fees support scheme could lead to lengthy delays and does not meet the basic needs of elderly people, support groups have warned.

Both Age Action and Nursing Homes Ireland said the Fair Deal, which replaces the subvention scheme for nursing home care, could lead to waiting lists amid fears that the Department of Health has underestimated the number of people who may apply and the cost.

Under the scheme, which begins on October 27, people entering nursing homes will be able to defer payment for their care until after their death, with the Revenue able to take up to 15% of the value of their home.
