GOVERNMENT and opposition parties are urging a high voter turnout for today’s referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, which has been described as a crucial decision on the future of the country.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the vote is “too important for people to stand on the sidelines” and it’s a decision “about the future of our country for our generation and for generations to come”.

Ahead of the today’s referendum, which could be crucial in determining his leadership, Mr Cowen said: “The outcome will determine the future direction of our country and I am urging people to go out and vote and to think clearly before making this vital decision.”
