Queen of mean shows soft side to open auction for charity

The tough-talking presenter of the BBC’s Weakest Link programme has shown her softer side by agreeing to open a silent auction in Schull next week.

The TV presenter, former journalist and author will open the auction at the Fastnet Marine and Sailing Centre on the Colla Road at 7.30pm on Saturday, August 22.

All funds raised will be donated to Schull Community Care Association to help it fund the construction of a social centre for the older residents in the area.

Organiser Julia Zagar said the invitation to Ms Robinson was extended thanks to typical West Cork ingenuity.

“Somebody knew somebody who knew somebody who knew her. And she agreed. We’re absolutely delighted,” she said.

International and local artists have contributed more than 120 pieces of highly collectible art work in a variety of media with something to suit all tastes and budgets, she added.

“The Schull Silent Auction is a lively, social and entertaining evening, and a very enjoyable way of raising funds for a very worthy cause,” she said.

“All strands of the community have come together in support of the evening which has generated huge interest with the opportunity meet with the artists and collectors.”

Tickets at €10 include complimentary wine and entry to a prize draw.

Ms Robinson is expected to spend the following days holidaying in the area.
