Trap is the toast of the town

GIOVANNI Trapattoni is the toast of Limerick, even before a ball is kicked at Thomond Park where the Republic of Ireland this evening take on Australia in a friendly soccer international.

Trap is the toast of the town

The Italian and his squad bring with them a huge financial spin-off for hard-pressed local hotels, which have been finding it hard to fill rooms.

Maria Kelly, chief executive of Limerick Chamber of Commerce, said big rugby games at Thomond Park are worth anything between €7 million and €10m to the local economy.

The recent Elton John and Rod Stewart concerts earned the city about €14m.

Ms Kelly said: “This game tonight could not come at a better time as the revenue from the fans is badly needed.

“We have a large stock of hotel rooms and when we have big games or other events at Thomond Park they have 100% occupancy. As well as the revenue, this game gives us a great opportunity to showcase Limerick.”

A recent survey by BDS & Simpson Xavier revealed that since the new Tho-mond Park opened last year, it has brought in business worth €58m to Limerick.

And the same survey found a huge satisfaction rating among fans with both the stadium and the friendliness of the city.
