THREE young women, in their 20’s, died in separate road crashes over the bank holiday weekend.

A woman was killed when the car she was driving was in collision with an articulated truck on the N24 about 2km from Kilsheelan in Co Tipperary, at about 9.50 pm last night. She was alone in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured.

In another accident which happened in Galway shortly after 11pm on Saturday.

Saffron Ritchie was killed in a single-car crash on the Athenry to Galway road a short distance from her home.

Ms Ritchie, a Welsh native, had been living in Ireland for more than a year.

Her 30-year-old sister, who was in the front passenger seat of the car at the time of the accident, escaped with minor injuries.

The third accident happened in Meath in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The 23-year-old victim was fatally injured when she lost control of the car she was driving and it collided with a ditch on the M51 at Curleyland, Athboy, at about 3.15am.

The deaths bring to 149 the number of people killed on the roads so far this year. Over the weekend, hundreds of mourners gathered in Co Limerick for the funeral of the elderly couple killed in a crash on Wednesday.

Maurice and Margaret Hartnett died when the van they were driving collided with an SUV.
