NUMBER OF GAA PLAYERS SHOWING SYMPTOMS

THE Down minor football team is at the centre of high-profile swine flu fears after it emerged that “a number” of players have developed flu-like symptoms.

NUMBER OF GAA PLAYERS SHOWING SYMPTOMS

A spokesperson for Down GAA said that since Thursday morning a section of the county minor panel had reported symptoms which may have been caused by the infection.

The team cancelled planned training sessions today and on Monday, while their match against Dublin minors next weekend now in doubt.

While it is unclear whether the players have contracted swine flu, a statement from the Down County Board last night confirmed they are undergoing medical examinations over the concerns.

“A number of players from the Down minor football squad have developed ‘flu-like’ symptoms this week,” read the statement. “In view of the current swine flu pandemic, the players have been advised as per up-to-date NHS guidance, and the situation is being closely monitored by the Down medical team.”

There have been 205 confirmed cases of swine flu in the Republic, with 11 infections being confirmed since Thursday night, and 58 confirmed cases in Northern Ireland. No deaths linked to swine flu have occurred either side of the Border.
