A NATIONAL not-for-profit organisation hoping to inspire and educate people to grow their own food is to be launched at the Waterford Harvest Festival in September.

The GIY (Grow it yourself) Ireland organisation, established by journalist and author Michael Kelly, aims to establish local food-growers groups in every town.

Hundreds of people already involved in GIY groups are engaged in activities including talks and demonstrations, garden visits, seed and plant swaps and produce-bartering. GIY meetings are free and open to people interested in food growing, a spokeswoman yesterday said.
