IN a contest for the last seat that looked far too close to call last night, internal Munster rivalry moved from the GAA pitches to a basketball court.

Sinn Féin’s Toiréasa Ferris was being philosophical, or some might say non-committal, as she arrived from her Tralee base to the Neptune Stadium in early afternoon, while her touring followers slipped away shortly after to watch TV coverage of the Cork-Kerry football clash.

“Sinn Féin has done incredibly well across the 26 counties. We’re very happy with the local election results,” she said, unsure entirely of her likely fate at that early stage in the day.
