MUCH commotion during Leaders’ Questions yesterday as two rare, exotic birds flew into the chamber and perched on the Government benches.

The surprise appearance startled many of the TDs, but a search through the relevant twitcher hand books soon had the creatures identified as the Lesser Spotted Green Tit Ciarán Cuffe, while the distinctive colouring gave away his coo-ing companion as Mary White-Throated Sparrow.

The pair first nested in Government Buildings shortly after the last general election with the rest of their flock – if, indeed, that is the right collective term for them – maybe it’s more accurate to refer to them as a smugness of Greens?
