Dublin voted friendliest capital – but so over-rated and boring
But tourism bosses might not be ready to bask in any glory just yet as Dublin was also named as the third-most boring European capital after Brussels and Zurich, while also coming third in the title for most over-rated capital, and second for worst-dressed.
It is the second year in a row that the Irish capital has been voted Europe’s most welcoming city in a survey by the travel advice website, Tripadvisor.
Dublin emerged as Europe’s city of the welcomes in the survey of more than 2,300 European travellers, with 15% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Amsterdam with Edinburgh a distant third.
“Dublin is well worth a visit – the locals were so warm and friendly and made me so welcome,” said one visitor in a review that must have Fáilte Ireland executives purring after recent years when doubts were being cast increasingly over our long-held friendly reputation.
Dubliners shared the dubious honour of the second worst-dressed metropolitans in Europe with Muscovites, but the ignominy of worst-dressed was saved for Londoners.
Not surprisingly, chic Parisians scooped the title as the most fashionable capital citizens followed closely by Romans and Madrileños.
However, Cockneys still had reasons to be cheerful as London topped the poll for best free attractions, best nightlife and best public parks. The English capital also earned less desirable tags as Europe’s most expensive and dirtiest city.
So the message is Dublin for the craic – not the couture.
