POWERFUL new surveillance laws will be of great assistance in preventing, as well as investigating, serious crimes, Garda chief Fachtna Murphy has said.

The Garda Commissioner said the force had a good record in charging people with homicide, such as the recent murders in Limerick.

“We have been quite successful and people have been brought before the courts in two high-profile, very, very bad crimes, Shane Geoghegan and Roy Collins,” the commissioner said.
