A CORK man accused of stealing three show-canaries had his wings clipped — to the extent he has been put behind bars himself.

Man caged for stealing show canaries from shed

Garda Aidan Forrest arrested Ian Heaphy of 91, Baker’s Road, Gurranabraher, Cork, and charged him with entering a shed at the rear of a house in the area and committing a theft.

Inspector Michael McGuire said it was alleged that 21-year-old Heaphy had stolen three canaries on March 26.

To be precise, it was alleged that Heaphy stole a Clare Green Finch Mule, a Rose Variegated Hen and a Frosted Cock.

The matters were heard at Cork District Court.

The owner of the show-birds went to his aviary in the shed at the rear of his home on Mount Eden Road, Gurranabraher, where it appeared that three canaries had flown the coup.

However, the owner’s feathers were ruffled when it became clear to him that the birds had been taken. A media appeal was launched for the safe return of the canaries.

Inspector McGuire said fortunately the three stolen birds were recovered and returned safely to the owner. The total value of the birds is e500.

The inspector applied for the accused to be remanded in custody for a week on the charge.

Defence solicitor, Diarmuid Kelleher, who represented Heaphy on free legal aid said there was no application for bail.

Judge Con O’Leary then remanded the defendant in custody.
