Blooms for all budgets: Say it on Mother’s Day with roses for €4

JUST as people’s wallets have recovered from the St Valentine’s Day splurge, Mother’s Day is on the way to put another hole into already creaking finances.

Blooms for all budgets: Say it on Mother’s Day with roses for €4

Every year thousands of Irish mothers look on in quiet disappointment as the same old unimaginative gifts of chocolates and flowers are handed out as a sign of our annual token of gratitude for bringing us into this world.

However, these are dark days and this year some of you may endeavour to be both boring and cheap when it comes to treating your mother this weekend.

Aldi and Lidl are on hand to offer a helping hand when it comes to a gift for your mother at a knockdown price.

Aldi, as expected, are offering “blooms for all budgets”, well not quite all budgets, mainly those at the lower end of the budget spectrum.

A bunch of tulips or daffodils come in at just €1.99 a bunch.

Those with a big heart and a bigger wallet can opt for the Mother’s Day gift bag at €5.99.

You can push the boat out altogether by giving mammy an Aldi Mother’s Day Luxury Bouquet at €19.99.

Lidl also offers a broad range of flower selections. From roses at €3.99 a bunch to a dozen deluxe roses at €24.99.

Even Ryanair are offering a gift voucher for mums, although if you want to take her to Cardiff for Ireland’s Grand Slam decider, it will cost you €227 for a seat on Europe’s lowest low fares airline — and that’s only going to get you to Stansted.

However, before all Irish mothers despair ahead of the big day, there are some comforting statistics to bear in mind.

Research conducted by iReach for Visa Europe claims that the recession will not impact on Mother’s Day spending in any way.

Apparently the average consumer will spend €90 on treats for their mother, with the majority buying, you guessed it, flowers.
