Christopher Maher, 42, of Robin View, Newrath, was killed instantly at the Rockshire Road, Ferrybank at about 11pm on Monday. Gardaí in Waterford are carrying out their investigations into the “single vehicle incident”.

The Garda Press Office yesterday said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and that “no one else was injured in the incident”.

The area was cordoned off after the accident and the Rockshire Road was closed to traffic up to 3pm yesterday until a technical examination of the scene could be carried out.

Gda Sgt Gavin Hegarty of Waterford Garda Station yesterday said: “We are asking anyone in the area of the Rockshire Road at the time of the incident who saw anything to come forward.”

Waterford City Councillor Davy Walsh, a Ferrybank resident, added: “That was an awful accident. But it’s not a notorious road for accidents at all — there’s plenty of width there. All we can do is sympathise with the family for the loss of life.”

Anyone with information can contact gardaí in Waterford on 051-305300.
