TRAVEL companies have reported a steady number of new year holiday bookings despite the financial burden facing consumers.

Industry sources have reported, however, that consumers are saving on their bookings by purchasing their holiday breaks in sterling and through British websites and have suggested that the coming weeks will give a much clearer picture of how holiday sales will go in 2009.

Budget Travel yesterday said its bookings were up on the first day of business compared to last year.
