Limerick ceilí hero releases DVD

NOEL TUOHY, who has been entertaining Limerick audiences with his céilí and dance-hall music for nearly 50 years, has struck a new note in a remarkable showbiz career.

Advancing to “the senior side of 75”, Noel has brought out his first DVD.

“It’s never too late. Down the years I brought out many records and this is my first venture into DVD.”

For 30 years, he led the Noel Tuohy Céilí Band.

“We did céilí and old-time dance music in ballrooms all over the county. We also played to audiences in the UK, the US and Canada.”

Noel, who plays the accordion, got a lot of material from the RTÉ archives. “We featured on an RTÉ programme in 1965 called Club Céilí which was presented by Sean Duignan — who went on to become a distinguished political journalist. We did four programmes and this gave me plenty of material.”

Noel said he is pleased at how the DVD turned out.

“It will mean my music will be remembered.”
